The Complete Guide to a Marquee Wedding

A marquee gives you a blank canvas and a place that is entirely your own for the day — but a beautiful tent is only ever half the job. The other half is everything an empty field quietly forgets to provide.

There is a particular magic to a marquee wedding. You arrive at a quiet corner of a field or a garden and, over a couple of days, watch an entire venue rise out of the grass. By the time guests step inside, it feels as though it has always been there. That illusion takes real planning — and the couples who enjoy the day most are the ones who understood early that they were not hiring a venue so much as building one from scratch.

Choosing your marquee type

The word "marquee" covers four quite different structures, and the right one depends on your guest numbers, your aesthetic and the ground you are putting it on.

  • Traditional canvas (pole marquee): the classic ivory tent with swooping interior linings and central poles. Romantic and characterful, but the poles eat into your floor plan and they need to be staked into soft ground, so they don't suit hard standing or shallow soil over rock.
  • Frame marquee: built on an aluminium frame with no internal poles, giving a clear, flexible interior. The most practical all-rounder — it can sit on grass, gravel or hard standing, joins neatly to a building, and copes well with British weather.
  • Tipi (giant hat tipis): tall wooden poles and natural canvas, usually several linked together. Wonderful for a relaxed, festival-leaning feel with open sides and fire pits, but they need plenty of height clearance and a generous footprint.
  • Stretch tent: a single sweep of waterproof fabric pulled into sculptural peaks. Brilliant for awkward spaces and contemporary styling, and they can flex around trees or wrap a terrace — though they offer less shelter in driving rain and wind than a fully enclosed structure.

If you are torn, think about your worst-case weather first and your photographs second. A frame marquee will keep a wet October afternoon comfortable; a stretch tent will look extraordinary on a still June evening. Most suppliers will walk your site with you before quoting, and that visit is worth more than any brochure.

The couples who relax into their marquee day are the ones who stopped thinking of it as "hiring a tent" and started thinking of it as building a small, temporary venue — power, plumbing and all.

What an empty field doesn't come with

This is the part that surprises people. A venue with four walls already has electricity, lavatories, a kitchen, lighting and a level floor. A field has grass and a view. Everything else, you bring. Budget for each of these from the very start rather than discovering them one panicked email at a time.

  • Power and generators: caterers, lighting, a band or DJ and heaters draw far more than a domestic socket can give. Most marquee weddings run on a silent diesel generator with a back-up unit — never assume you can run a long lead from the farmhouse.
  • Flooring: grass is uneven, gets muddy and ruins heels. A proper subfloor (interlocking panels with carpet, coir or a hard wooden floor for dancing) keeps the space level, warm underfoot and dry.
  • Loos: hire luxury trailer toilets, not festival cubicles. As a rough guide, allow one cubicle per 25–35 guests, and check whether they need a water connection or arrive self-contained.
  • Lighting: daylight will leave you long before the party does. Plan festoons, uplighters, table lighting and — crucially — discreet practical lighting for the car park, paths and loos so nobody turns an ankle in the dark.
  • Heating: even in July, a clear night gets cold fast. Indirect diesel heaters ducted into the marquee are standard; book them as insurance regardless of the season.
  • Water and waste: caterers need a clean water supply and somewhere for grey water to go. Confirm the source, the run, and how waste leaves the site.

Planning the layout

Sketch the day as a journey. Guests arrive, are greeted with a drink, mingle, are called to sit, eat, listen to speeches, then dance. Your layout should make each of those moves feel effortless.

  1. Allow generous space. A common mistake is squeezing in the largest guest count the tent can technically hold. Allow roughly 12–15 square feet per seated guest once you include the top table, dance floor, bar and a catering tent or "back of house" area behind the scenes.
  2. Separate the loud from the quiet. Keep the band and bar at one end and a softer seating or chill-out area at the other, so older guests and small children have somewhere calmer to retreat to.
  3. Plan the turnaround. If the same space hosts the ceremony, meal and dancing, you need a clear plan (and helpers) to flip the room while guests enjoy drinks elsewhere.
  4. Don't forget the edges. A catering tent, a cloakroom, somewhere dry for prams and wellies, and a sheltered outdoor area with heaters all need a place on the plan.

What it really costs

Marquee weddings are often chosen in the belief that they are cheaper than a venue. Sometimes they are — but only once you've costed the whole picture honestly. For a wedding of around 100–120 guests in the UK, a realistic all-in figure for the structure and its essential extras (flooring, lighting, heating, generator, furniture and luxury loos) typically lands somewhere between £8,000 and £20,000, before catering, drink, flowers or styling.

The variables that move the number most are guest count, how remote the site is, the season (winter means more heating and longer cabling) and the level of finish you want inside. A sensible build timeline

The tent does not appear on the morning of the wedding. Work backwards and you'll see why marquee suppliers want a multi-day window:

  • 12 months out: book the marquee, confirm the site, and check access for large delivery lorries.
  • 3–4 days before: the structure goes up. Grass needs time, and a rushed build is where mistakes hide.
  • 2 days before: flooring, lighting, heating, loos and power are installed and tested.
  • The day before: furniture, styling, catering set-up and a full walk-through with anyone working the day.
  • 1–2 days after: de-rig and take-down. Build this into any agreement with the landowner so you aren't paying for an extra night you didn't plan.

Give yourself that runway and the day itself becomes the calm part. The work happens quietly in the days before, and by the time the first guest arrives, your field has become somewhere that feels like it was always meant to hold a wedding.
