The best away days are not the most expensive or the most extreme — they are the ones matched to your team. Here are fifteen that earn their day out of the office.

A good away day does three things: it gives people a break from the daily grind, it builds the kind of trust that no team meeting can, and it sends everyone back to their desks feeling more connected to each other and to the work. A bad away day does the opposite — it embarrasses the introverts, exhausts the parents racing for the last train, and becomes a running office joke. The difference is almost never the activity itself. It is whether the day was chosen for the team you actually have. Active & outdoors

Movement breaks down hierarchy faster than almost anything. When the managing director is just as muddy as the new starter, the usual roles dissolve. Keep the physical demands inclusive, though — always offer a meaningful non-strenuous role.

Sometimes an away day needs to do real work — set a strategy, fix a stuck process, or simply think without the inbox. These ideas channel competitive energy or genuine focus.

Not every team needs adrenaline. After a punishing quarter, the kindest and most effective away day is simply space to breathe together. Never underestimate how much goodwill a genuinely restful day buys.

How to choose the right one

Start with the objective, not the activity. Be honest about what this away day is for — is it to reward a team that has worked flat out, to integrate people after a merger, to set strategy, or simply to have fun? The answer rules half the list in or out immediately.

Then run any shortlisted idea through four quick filters:

  1. Inclusivity. Will everyone be able to take part with dignity — different fitness levels, ages, disabilities, and the people who quietly dread enforced fun? If an activity sidelines anyone, drop it or adapt it.
  2. Energy match. A drained team needs restoration, not a high-ropes course. A flat team might need exactly that jolt. Read the room you actually have.
  3. Logistics. Travel time, accessibility, dietary needs and the people racing for childcare pick-up. A day that ends at 6pm two hours from the office helps no one.

How to run it well

  • Make it genuinely optional in spirit. Hold it in work time and cover the cost, so attending is the easy choice — but never shame the person who opts out.
